Have you ever considered second chance hiring as a talent strategy for your organization? Join SHRM Tennessee to learn how a model for effective second chance hiring has been developed to successfully help companies use candidates who are being re-introduced into their local communities. Both Tim Dempsey and David Chalker have worked in this space to help these candidates have a viable option to return to a productive work life while assisting companies with much needed talent. Chattanooga Endeavors’ big focus is Smart Second Chance hiring and training for local employers. Their guidance the organization offers results in supporting the role each hiring manager plays in helping someone successfully return to life and work in their community while benefitting the hiring organization.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS & FACILITATOR

David Chalker
Executive Director, Chattanooga Endeavors
DAVID CHALKER is a Chattanooga native who spent much of his career in the banking profession as a business development officer, manager and vice president. This included leadership roles in TD Bank, BB&T, Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets and a career launched from an AmeriCorps Internship at Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise while attending UTC. Since returning to Chattanooga a few years ago, David has been the Executive Director of Chattanooga Endeavors, Inc. This is an organization he first encountered in college as a student resident at Dismas House (a transition home bringing together undergraduates and recently released returning citizens).

Tim Dempsey
Founding Director, Chattanooga Endeavors
TIM DEMPSEY is the Founding Director of Chattanooga Endeavors. After living in a halfway house as a college student, he helped establish the first reentry service in Southeast Tennessee, which remained the region’s only such service for many years. He went on to develop one of Tennessee’s first modern work readiness programs for returning citizens and pioneer the use of a nonprofit staffing model as an effective reentry strategy. In 2013, he helped create a large, ongoing, state-funded initiative in Milwaukee using a group development model he perfected at Chattanooga Endeavors. He continues to work with the University of Wisconsin on a project that grew out of that initiative. He is now helping develop Chattanooga Endeavors’ Second Chances Academy as a “demand side solution” to the employment needs of returning citizens. Tim holds a BA from the University of Notre Dame, an MA from Catholic University of America, and an MBA from the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Kathy Tuberville
SHRM Tennessee Workforce Readiness Director and Associate Professor of Teaching at the University of Memphis
